I haven’t updated here in a while because I wanted to put everything I’ve been working on into one post since they’re all related. But today I got ✧˖°. inspired ⋆˙⟡ and did a quick doodle! The other post is almost ready though, so please look forward to it.
Wasn’t really happy with the thumbnails I had from last week as I thought they were quite boring. They felt like a thumbnail for the sake of having thumbnails, which wasn’t what the brief needed. So I made some more thumbnails.
I also tried making my thumbnails have more detail, such as texture so it just looks better. Elevate it. Render it. etc
This was my first attempts and frankly they weren’t that good.
These were slightly better. Even though I wanted to use broad texture brushes to quickly put the idea down, I also quite liked mark making with just strokes.
I also started leaning into this large ancient bone structure embedded in the landscape that I thought was cool.
I started making the thumb nailing on my sketchbook, before going over them digitally. I will post the ones without the digital sometime after I have access to a good scanner.
Use the gallery to find inspiration for your 2D environmental concept art. Focus on environmental and landscape artworks that can serve as references for your ideas.
Task for Studies:
– Create a minimum of 6 studies of chosen works.
– Format: Thumbnails, small and simplified sketches in a landscape frame.
– Approach: Sketch or render the works in your own style, focusing on the aspects of mark making, composition, tone, and narrative.
Bonus task: (optional)
Observational drawings: draw anything and everything that inspires you, from the exhibition spaces, materials, people, architecture, or minute details.
There was definitely room for further refinement, but as this was an in-class exercise, the result reflects what I was able to complete within that time.
Additional polish wasn’t essential for this quick practice, but the fact that I couldn’t reach that level within the time frame reflects my inexperience and speed. Need to be more efficient!
